[Poll #1581463]

Seriously. I'm trying to downsize my apartment to make it more moveable, and my bed issue IRKS me so. I want to get rid of both my headboard/frame and my small mirrored chest-of-drawers. The chest-of-drawers can easily be replaced by one of those plastic three-drawer things they sell at Wal-mart, which hopefully will fit in my closet once I get rid of everything in it. I don't like my bed because I'm too alert to every creak and groan bed frames inevitably make. I was thinking about getting a low bed frame, and then I got to thinking--I have a box spring. Do I even need a bed frame? I can get a cute contrast fitted sheet to cover the box spring, even set the whole mess upon a nice area rug to save the apartment carpet. I can get big ass pillows to make a mock headboard. I'm fairly sure I can make a very presentable presentation. ^_^

And no more fucking monster under the bed problem. Fuck you, Tug. >:|

P.S. ...I may or may not have watched $100 Makeover this weekend. 6_6

P.S.S. DUDE. I changed "probably" to "problem" before I posted. Why does it still say "probably"??? GRR. ARGH.

I was watching a commercial on the television that talked of how long a mattress should be kept and how it increases in weight with sweat, skin cells and dust mites. *cue the ewwwwwwe* It occurred to me that that last could be solved with those all enclosing moisture proof mattress protectors that zip shut.
I like the idea of the contrast fitted sheet but perhaps something for those times, heaven forbid, you get sick and make it only to the mattress' edge.. The frame does allow for some elevation above nasty things that might happen/travel about on the floor. *coughs* think what likes cookie crumbs *coughs*

When my daughter was very little we put the mattress itself directly on the carpet. It was great since if she fell out of bed, it wasn't a far fall and took no parental effort for her to put herself back into bed. *grins* Teaches autonomy, has nothing to do with parents who are very, very, very tired.
From experience if you do the moisture proof mattress protector make sure you have a really thick mattress pad because you'd be surprised how uncomfortable having your body heat reflected back at you is.

I've heard 8 years for mattresses. I've had mine for...three? So hopefully I've got a couple more years yet.

Have you noticed how popular those platform beds are becoming? I don't see how they offer any more elevation than my box springs. And I'd rather vacuum a lot than put up with the damn creaking my bed makes. I've had a bed frame break on me before--while I was on it. I've never trusted bed frames since. That's probably playing a large part in my musings as well. ^^

And mattress protectors are plastic--which means those fucking crackly noises. A PEA! A PEA UNDER TWENTY MATTRESSES! I am a delicate princess of a sleeper. XD

I have covetted platform beds with all their drawers and secret hidey places and elimination of a need for dressers. Then again I like to see where everything is. *laughs* They are also damned heavy which negates your simplify so much easier to move idea.

I can see your fear of creaking beds especially if you had a frame break under you. Platforms I would think would be more solid but no frame and plastic bins are easier to move. Is this a zen thing.. less is more?

I also live in an apartment setting where my bedroom wall is usually someone else's bedroom wall. So not only does my restless sleeping sometimes wake me up with the creaking, I have to wonder what my neighbors think. XD

Yeah, a big solid piece of wood would add difficulty back into my simplification scheme. I did consider it though. But I like second floor apartments and there's usually not a whole lot of manuverability on those tiny landings.

Man, I'd trade my sofa for one of those giant three-people beanbags if I could. That'd just leave my washer and dryer for the real moving bitch. But I am not giving up my washer and dryer! I HATE laundromats. >:|

We had our mattress/box springs on the floor for a long time. The major downside was tall husband is tall and it was hard on him. I never had any major issues (except looking at all the dust when we moved it. Ick!)

As for platform beds, you can make them for fairly cheaply and extra storage = good?

Yeah, but then I move in two years and I gotta try and get it through a small apartment door onto a narrow landing and then down a flight of stairs. :( Unless I could make one that hinged in the middle so you can fold it up when moving. :p
